Environment and ecology
A place of peaceful reflection
We want Oakfield Gardens Crematorium to be part of the community and a place of peaceful reflection for the bereaved. In addition, we want the gardens and green space to be open to the local community for use throughout the year.
Oakfield Gardens Crematorium uses a gas cremator with an advanced filtration system including a DeNOx system to eliminate nitrogen oxide. The cremator is used as efficiently as possible to minimise the unnecessary use of gas. Emissions are monitored continually and any issues are dealt with immediately. Evidence of those emissions is also submitted to Environmental Health as part of the monitoring of the facility.
Furniture within the building and in the grounds is also designed to be sustainable to reduce the use of plastics and other non-sustainable materials.
Solar panels provide power and heat is captured and reused to heat the building and provide hot water. Electric vehicle charging points are on-site for visitors to use when attending services, contributing to a reduction in the use of fossil fuels.

The landscape is designed with ecology in mind. Areas of the landscape grow naturally to increase biodiversity, and to encourage nature and wildlife. This is supported with specifically planted wildflower areas and trees planted throughout the site, some of which can be dedicated to a loved one. Bug hotels are placed throughout the landscape to encourage pollination and wildlife species and bird and bat boxes have been placed on the main building. Regulations are in place at Oakfield gardens to minimise waste and protect nature.

The site has been designed with a sustainable drainage system to capture water which can be used throughout the site. A water feature has also been created to increase the ecological environment and biodiversity of the site.
